Neighborhood Spotlight: BabyCakes

We visit BabyCakes pretty much daily and not just because they're right next door (we share the same 248 Broome address). Their vegans treats, strong coffee, and Kombucha drinks are a favorite at our salon. Founder Erin McKenna (photographed at left with Top Chef's Tom Colicchio) says it best: "In a city dominated by cupcakes overflowing with sugar, flour and butter cream, it’s easy for those with persnickety diets to feel left out." Instead of eggs, dairy, sugar, and wheat, BabyCakes creates their equally yummy baked goods with cold-pressed coconut oil, agave nectar, garbanzo flour, and spelt. If you're in the neighborhood or find yourself with time before or after your hair appointment with us, definitely stop over for a visit.

Mascott

We’ve been rockin’ singer Kendall Jane Meade’s locks for years, and we also happen to love her honest, melodic folk-pop. She’s released three full-length albums, had songs on Grey’s Anatomy and plays often around downtown NYC and Brooklyn. This song, Dream Another Day, is our favorite tune from her recent album ART PROJECT, which Spin Magazine called “her best album yet.” Buy it on iTunes asap!

Fringe Goes Grunge with Michael Lavine

Our friend, photographer Michael Lavine, is celebrating the release of his new book, GRUNGE. With a release party at Bowery Hotel on Tuesday, the much anticipated collection gives another voice and view to an era in music & style that made an impact worldwide.

More than a decade after his death, alienated, awkward, heavily eye-lined Kurt Cobain continues to sit front and center in the arena of popular culture, as the subject of books, music, fashion, gossip, and inspiration for major motion pictures and documentaries.
Together with flannelsporting, music-obsessed communities emerging (in the late 1980s and early 1990s) from the chilly Pacific Northwest, Nirvana, Sound Garden, and Pearl Jam changed the scene with wild aggressive sounds and truly alternative records.
Featuring photographs by Michael Lavine, author Thurston Moore (of Sonic Youth) writes about the discovery of Seattle punk youth, the seminal bands that defined the movement, the exploitation of the subculture, and the backlash of grunge.

Marlene's Curly Hair Tip #1

Clean up your hair product habit! Only use shampoos, conditioners and styling products that are sulfate-free and alcohol-free. Sulfates and alcohols strip your hair of its natural oils and dry out your hair, leaving you with a frizzy mess. Those that are more natural, higher quality, and have the least amount of additives are usually a good bet....we carry Pureology shampoos and conditioners at the salon: totally sulfate-free (and we sell them for less $ than Ricky's or Duane Reade!) Also try to avoid products with silicones or silicone derivatives because they leave a coating on your hair that's hard to wash out and doesn't let beneficial conditioners penetrate the hair shaft. Start with a good foundation and you'll find that you will be using less products and will be on your way to soft, shiny, bouncy curls!

ART OPENING: Saturday, 11/14

Please join us at the salon this Saturday for the opening of our newest artists on exhibit in Fringe: Flavia Cordoso and Yvonne Ng. These two talented artists will be displaying prints and jewelry -- both perfect for the upcoming holiday season. 'Tis (almost) the season for gift giving!

Hope to see you for a glass of wine and a little mingling.
