Its a sad day! Our neighbor across the way, TG-170, a Lower East Side staple is moving. We will definitely miss the funky, fashionable store but are currently taking full advantage of their moving sale...and you should too!!! They have tons upon tons of clothes starting at $25!! I was able to score a Christian Dior shirt for only $25. Now if that's not a steal, I don't know what is!

Last week our client Eli Sudbrack, artist and main collaborator for Assume Vivid Astro Focus, celebrated the opening of Gaga's Workshop at Barneys New York. Lady Gaga took over the 5th floor of Barneys, transforming it with a small group of artist, including Eli, to create her version of Santa's Workshop. The shop will feature all sorts of interesting stocking stuffers for the holidays. If you're gonna make a point of going to see holiday windows this year, this is a must see on the list. Not only is the 5th floor completely made over, they included windows, shopping bags and the entrance to the department store as well.

On Thursday, September 15, at 8:00 p.m. come celebrate the work of Margaret
Clarke with us as she expresses her personal New York experience in honor of
9/11. In her own words,

"The spring after Sept. 11^th I found a pile of discarded art supplies
on the street near my apartment. It felt like it had to do with 9/11;
an East Village artist getting out or giving up, some dismissal in
their action to rid themselves of what once felt like a possibility.
In the pile were eight small, poorly stretched canvases with paint
splatter and brush marks. I took them and when the events of Sept. 11^th
crept into a place where I could paint about them, those battered
canvases were what I wanted to paint on. A New York panorama,
served as the base image for all the paintings but I let the original
splotches and marks direct me to eight different places. I took what
that artist left behind, that fellow New Yorker, and together we made
these paintings."

Sorry I've been MIA for a bit, I was a little busy with classes.. I swear I never thought I was ever gonna have to pull an all-nighter after college.. :( So back to blogging.. and hair! It's already time for fall hairstyles and the messier the better. Add feathers, beads or other accessories to your liking. As seen here in Free People's 20011 look book and the beautiful Spanish model Malena Costa, wild braids are the perfect hair-do if you don't have time for a blow-out.

Fox Debut's Art Work Wed. August 10th at Fringe!

What can I say, our new artist Fox is a total fox and his art ain't too bad, either. His mix media uses bikes as objects and may resemble different things (think Pablo Picasso!) but mostly just pleasing. The masculinity in his work gives Fringe the juxtapose it needs.

We were inspired to work with Fox and his bike boys and girls of Clementine Courier on Broome to generate bike culture, green culture and to get some damn bike racks on our block.

Currently, the LES BID office is working hard to make this happen but until then, come, park outside and see his show Wednesday, August 10th at 7:30.

The twentieth season of Shakespeare in the Parking Lot returns to our neighborhood at Broome and Ludlow (It's literally 5 steps away from our front door!). "The Comedy of Errors" will open the season starting July 7 and run Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays through July 23. Directed by Kathy Curtiss, the Drilling Company production adapts the story of “mischance and mistaken identity to a modern pizzeria in Little Italy."

Hamlet will be the next performance on the lineup.

Double Hair Knot

We're saying bye to adding embellishments, headbands and accessories to our hair. the hair trend for 2011 is leading towards a more Au natural and less structured look. Fashionising tells us how to wear this double hair knot trend from the Michale Kors SS 2011 collection. See the instructions to create this easy style and see more pictures of the look after the jump

Instructions (via fashinising)

First, spritz the hair all over with a sea-salt spray (Orlando Pita used Surf Spray. We recommend you use Fringe's own texture spray, Devoted )
Next, scrunch the hair into bunches while drying to add waves and texture
Pull a thick section of hair out at the front, sweeping it into a deep side part
Finally, take back two sections of hair and tie into a knot - then again into a double knot

Munch Gallery right across the street from our salon is debuting their new show this Friday. It's a photography exhibition by Amos Mac.

In his own words he says "I’m an artist who photographs the dynamic, the gender rebellious, the under-represented and beyond though voyeuristic, snap-shot styled portraits. Preferring to shoot models in their personal spaces over a studio, the photos I create have been described as “bright, saturated images of people and places who look fucked up and beautiful in equal measure”(Amos's Blog)

Neighbor: Babycakes & Plain Cake Donut Recipe

Back in 2009, we wrote a short post on our next door neighbor, Babycakes! (we actually share the same 248 Broome address). Now, their business is booming, expanding to the west coast, and I just found out they are releasing a new cookbook, Babycakes Covers the Classics (amazon.com, $16.50). If you're sitting at home craving one of founder Erin McKenna's delicious sweets be sure to try out one of her gluten-free vegan recipes. She reveals how to make your own version of plain cake donuts.

BabyCakes Plain Cake Donut

Makes one dozen

Ingredients
1/3 c. canola oil or melted refined coconut oil, plus extra for brushing the trays
1 c. vegan sugar
¾ c. white or brown rice flour
1/3 c. garbanzo and fava bean flour
½ c. potato starch
¼ c. arrowroot
1½ tsp. baking powder
½ tsp. xanthan gum
½ tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. baking soda
6 tbsp. unsweetened applesauce
¼ c. vanilla extract
½ c. hot water

1. Preheat oven to 325°. Brush two six-mold donut trays with oil and set aside.

2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the sugar, flours, starch, arrowroot, baking powder, xanthan gum, salt, and baking soda.

3. Add oil, applesauce, vanilla, and water. Continue mixing with a rubber spatula just until the ingredients are combined.

4. Using a melon baller or tablespoon, drop 2½ tbsp. of batter into each mold. Spread the batter evenly around the mold with a toothpick.

5. Bake for 8 minutes, rotate, and continue to bake until donuts are golden brown, about 7 minutes more. Let them cool in the molds for 5 minutes if sprinkling with toppings such as cinnamon sugar, 15 minutes if using glaze or icing.

6. Run a knife around the donuts in the molds, lift them out, and place them on a baking sheet.

7. Coat them in your choice of topping. Cinnamon sugar sure is fast and easy: In a small bowl, whisk together ¾ c. vegan sugar with 2 tsp. ground cinnamon and a pinch of salt.

8. Try not to eat them all. Doh!

Wearing skirts as dresses

I've been seeing Maxi dresses and skirts everywhere on the runway, stores and the streets. They are perfect for this breezy weather. They look good on all body types, because it enlgates the body and hides our problem areas discreetly. I would say maxi skirts are more versatile than dresses because you can pull one up, cinch it with a belt and call it a new dress! Great wardrobe pieces are always convertible and versatile.

Free People even has a skirt showcasing the five different ways to style their convertible maxi. Their website gives me such great ideas.

If you're shopping around, our neighbors TG-170, Foley & Corinna, and James Coviello carry similar skirts that are right on trend. Do you guys have a preference to maxi dresses or skirts?

The Lo-Down posted an event that I thought I would share with you all :) PS 110 is hosting a Spring Fair tomorrow on Lewis St between Broome and Delancey. They write: The fair is open to all of Lower East Side community and beyond. It will take place in the school yard as well as Lewis street between Broom and Delancey. There will be rides, games, music, raffle auction, and food (which will consist of our gourmet food truck – Kimchi Taco and few other trucks/vendors and local restaurants).

LiveInTheater on Mott Street hosts an interactive theater performance on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. You can watch either The Ryan Case 1873 on Saturdays or The Lombardi Case 1975 on Fridays and Sundays. A reviewer of the former said it's like watching CSI: NY but in the 1870s.

There is a certain meditative quality in the redundant gestures and sounds of pencil scratching on paper. My art work depicts the inverse relationship of my desires and dreams with my restless nature and wickedness."

The art work of Jami Goddess features sensual, sexy women that display an implicit, haunting emotion, overcoming adversity and pain but with a touch of macabre sarcasm. The female figures have been described as dark and surreal; one reviewer went as far as calling the women she creates post-apocalyptic pinups.

She also illustrated and designed all the label art work for Leucadia Red, a private wine label (www.leucadiared.com), of which she is also the co-owner and brand manager. The wine is being sold at wine bars up and down the coast of California. She has recently teamed up with the Satin Dollz, Hollywood's own USO pin-up entertainment troupe to combine live and still art into a fabulous event coming soon to Los Angeles. 2011 Native American Film + Video Festival!

Our stylist Laura's band Family Dynamics will be performing the closing night.

She also created the score for the short documentary Open Season directed by Apache Filmmaker Raquel Chapa.

Organized by the Film and Video Center of the National Museum of the American Indian, the Native American Film + Video Festival celebrates the creative energy of Native American directors, producers, writers, actors, musicians, cultural activists, and many others who support their endeavors.

Kelsey's Trip to SXSW!

About two weeks ago I road tripped down to Austin Texas for the music portion of South By South West. I was very excited to see many of the southern states for the first time. On our way down we passed through the beautiful mountains of North Carolina and stopped in Ashville to get some much needed rest and really good pizza. We also got to catch this beautiful sunset over the blossoming trees.

The next morning we jumped in the cars at 6 am to make our way into Texas. After many hours of driving, we made it through Virginia, Tennessee and Arkansas and stopped in Dallas for dinner. As a yankee I ignorantly expected Texas to be all cowboy boots and bolo ties, but Dallas is a beautiful city full of sky scrapers and amazing street art. These are a few of my favorites:

After dinner we headed to Waco for the night, and early the next morning drove the last two hours to Austin! As soon as we got into town you could hear music from every bar, and on every street corner there were people out with their guitars. My first stop was at the Rusty Spur to see a great band called Oona from LA. This duo were so fun and the lead singer's voice was just adorable!

After this show we took to the streets to experience all that Austin had to offer. I walked around with the band I was traveling with, Like Diamonds, and help them get the word out of their two showcases!

We also stumbled upon an amazing speakeasy just off of 6th Street with a beautifully delicate decor, it reminded me of all the great places in the LES!

That night we partied like rock stars and watched Like Diamonds, ShinobiNinja, and Penguin Prison tear it up at Rusty Spurs!

Joetta Maue is full time artist primarily using photography and fibers. Her most recent body of work is a series of embroideries and images exploring the conflicts and contradictions that exist within intimacy. Joetta’s work resides within the realm of the everyday; everyday objects, autobiography, and the female. She is especially interested in the role of personal relationships in our lives, seen in our most intimate moments and spaces.

The role of craft practices such as embroidery and knitting are essential to her work because of their slow meditative labor and their role in the history of the woman’s voice. All of the linens used in her work are re-appropriated handmade linens creating collaboration between her and women of the past. Joetta’s work has been shown throughout galleries and museums across the country.

Joetta authors the popular textile arts blog Little Yellowbird as well as being a regular contributor to the online journal Mr. X Stitch & the Textile Arts Center blog. She is featured in the recently published book. Indie Craft edited by Jo Waterhouse and in a forthcoming embroidery book in 2011.

AQUARIUS (JAN 20-FEB 19) Kind of a stunning month, if you like dramatic change, unexpected events, and lots of popular uprisings. February kicks off with the Venus- Uranus square making a potent aspect to the February 2nd new moon. Fun, excitement, and a dose of the unexpected - not to mention really bad weather. Venus and Uranus stimulate what you really want and need and their influence continues for a good couple of weeks. Meanwhile Venus enters Capricorn on the 4^th and squares Jupiter: you're feeling good, happy, and solid. Relish this delicious combination which, together with the North Lunar Node, brings a wonderful sense of being loved. And your Aquarian self has no choice but to take it in - especially when Venus catches up to Pluto and you get all deep and mushy.All month long Mars marches forward in Aquarius in step with the Sun. This conjunction brings you a lot of physical activity; you're doing a ton of things and not always paying attention. This can make you a bit physically vulnerable so be mindful while sculpting those abs - don't drop any weights on your toes! From the 15^th to 20^th you get all serious about relationships when Venus squares Saturn, perhaps missing someone. With the goal of preservation and increased understanding I collect, abstract, paint and layer the details and minutia of my daily life over periods of time. Attempting to preserve my short-term memories in tandem and not necessarily in chronological sequence, I am operating with the assertion that short-term memories find their importance in the whole rather than in the sum of its parts.

Eight years ago we were told that my father had an undiagnosable brain disorder and he was no longer able to retain short-term memories. My interest in memory derives from the unanswered questions I was left with.

When do our daily experiences transform into our recollections of the past?

How much of our long-term memory is a sum of small insignificant events?

Is this whole greater then the sum of its parts?

How do short and long term memory influence each other?

If short-term memory is lost, is it only a matter of time before we loose our long-term memory?

And ultimately, what is the impact of memory on our concept of our selves and our placement within the world.

What began as an investigation into the properties of short-term memory has grown to include experimentation through visual sense memories. I believe that sense-memories and nostalgic responses (more closely related to short-term memory as opposed to long-term memory) generate a different view of our personal histories. While less reliable, less responsible, more fleeting and more subjective they are also more precious.

I am interested in supplanting more of these moments, creating a trail that is less tangible and more precious. By embedding paintings with genuine nuance, paying attention to the specific details that may have been lost otherwise I am in a way burying time capsules to find later in the form of visual sense memory experiences.

Happy New Year!

2011 brings us the start of a 7 year Uranus-Pluto square.

No, that's not a typo! Seven years of change!

The year starts off on January 4th with a solar eclipse on the new moon in Capricorn.

This is a fascinating eclipse -- even if it isn't visible in North America -- because it interacts with the chart of the US in a very big way. The eclipsing Sun and Moon make an exact opposition to the 13-degrees-of-Cancer US Sun....And, the Sun and Moon make major angles to Mars, Saturn, and Pluto.

This eclipse is about work and the lack of it. By that I mean unemployment. Unfortunately there is likely to be another round of reports about increasing joblessness. (The economic situation doesn't improve until after the Jupiter-Saturn square in April. ) In addition, the planetary configuration on the eclipse indicates a kind of standstill... Hmmm, that could mean the US Congress and its penchant for gridlock.

Yet the planets in play do signify real roll-up-your-sleeves hard work, so it is a great time to focus on goals for the year, as long as we can live with the fact that things appear to be utterly stuck.

But how about some good news?

Even though the last time Uranus and Pluto were squared in cardinal signs was between 1929 and 1933, do not despair! This combination is about change, first and foremost. Uranus enters Aries in March, making a square to Pluto pretty much on and off through 2018.

I know, how can a girl wrap her brain around this? For starters, our brains will be very much at issue once Jupiter enters Aries on January 22. For the next couple of months, Jupiter and Uranus will be conjunct in and around the very beginning of Aries. Aries has to do with the head and the brain, and Jupiter in that sign signifies an expansion of our thinking about .... our thinking. With Uranus in the picture expect breakthroughs about autism, alzheimers, brain injury, etc.

But about that good news....

2011 looks a lot better than 2010 and 2009, even with the Uranus-Pluto action. For example, apart from Mercury, there will be no retrograde passes of a personal planet.

Keep in mind that Saturn and Jupiter are both cruising ahead and away from the clutches of Pluto, and even their opposition in April isn't a bad thing at all. Personally, I like Saturn and Jupiter together -- they have a certain groundedness together and they balance out each other's unpleasant tendencies. As for Uranus and Pluto -- expect the unexpected, personally and globally.

However...Uranus in Aries may indeed fan the flames of individualism and so we may see the Tea Party's lunacy gain strength at least while Jupiter is also in Aries. (Thank god, Jupiter enters Taurus in June....)

There is repression with Uranus and Pluto but also revolution.... These combinations bode ill for immigration rights in the US unless we can harness the potential for effective community organizing that is indicated by Uranus and Pluto. don;t mourn organize

Mostly Uranus and Pluto have to do with cracks and fissures. Things will break open under this transit. Some of it will be revelatory and positive and some of it will be destructive. The core essence of things will become visible. That probably includes seeing plenty of lava flow.

We'll have seven years to figure it out!

Your January Forecast...

CAPRICORN (DEC21-JAN 19) Well, having the new moon in Capricorn kick off the month -- not to mention the year -- is a fabulous beginning. You must take advantage of the new moon and its relationship to Mars, Saturn, and Pluto to do some very Capricorn-like planning. Seriously. Get down to business. Just try not to be frustrated by a certain stuckness, a sense that people don't want to move. They are moving -- you just can't see it. In fact, your expectations of people are not quite reasonable during the first week of January. Please try to avoid feeling stressed out -- you can drop that "weight of the world is on my shoulders" thing you do so well. This is actually a very potent time for you because you have the ability to plant the seeds of some new projects and ideas. Jupiter crosses into Aries on the 22nd, and at that point you will experience the sense of movement you have sought all month...

AQUARIUS (JAN 20-FEB 19) The month begins with a Capricorn new moon which is all about nuts and bolts and getting down to business but Venus in Scorpio squares Neptune in Aquarius. So while you should be filing or organizing your tax records you're distracted by romantic yearnings. The thing to do is harness your wants and desires and vision with the help of that new moon. Remember that Capricorn isn't all business -- it has a lot of sensuality too. Mars enters Aquarius on the 16th, followed by the Sun on the 20th. For a few days afterwards a Sun-Mars conjunction makes you energetic but a bit physically vulnerable. Especially with Jupiter entering Aries on the 22nd, you might overdo it at the gym, so be careful. Follow your intuition about setting limits.

PISCES (FEB 20-MARCH 19) You have big plans for work during January but during the first week, all you have to do is think, not act. It will be hard to get anything done except planning, and don't put pressure on yourself about working. Planning is work, for god's sake. You need to use the new moon on the 4th to focus and plan, but also allow yourself to rest and recuperate. Feed your senses at the beginning of the month, and use the Venus Neptune square to dream a bit. Jupiter enters Aries on the 22nd, and with that comes plenty of movement, so enjoy the stuckness of the first couple of weeks of the month. In fact, Jupiter and Uranus are conjunct all month, so there is a tremendous sense of possibility, potential, and surprise happening in your life.

ARIES (MAR22-APR 20) Get ready: Jupiter is coming! It spends the month speeding up in the last degrees of Pisces, overtaking Uranus, and then on the 22nd, it enters Aries where it stays til June. I urge you to try to stay still during the first two weeks of January, because once Jupiter enters your own sign you won't feel like being still. The new moon in Capricorn on the 4th is excellent for planning and for envisioning your goals. I know this new moon sounds all concrete and Mars-Saturn-y but there is a powerful square of Venus and Neptune also happening. Keep one foot in your spiritual and artistic inspiration and the other in the material world. Remember, Jupiter can bring a poignant sense of completion: stay as grounded as possible to be able to experience its breadth.

TAURUS (APR20- MAY 21) Only a Taurus can really revel in the peculiar delights January has on offer. First, there is the new moon in Capricorn on the 4th so put your planning hat on and get to work. But it is not all business -- Venus and Neptune are squared at the same time so you have to attend to your creative self too. This is a powerful lunation for inspiration, vision, and planning so you must use it. Stay in your bathrobe until Jupiter enters Aries on the 22nd and you feel better able to deal with the world; at the same time Mars and the Sun make you very effective at your work. Jupiter and Uranus are conjunct this month, bringing many opportunities your way. Be sure to stay open to them.

GEMINI (MAY21-JUN 20) This is an interesting month for you. Jupiter and Uranus are conjunct this month, and then Jupiter overtakes Uranus and crosses the cardinal axis on the 22nd. That sense of excitement and potential is back, and man oh man are you relieved. Use the Capricorn new moon on the 4th to focus, to make plans, to envision concrete changes in your life. Venus and Neptune are squared during this new moon so let your dreams fly. Try not to feel pressured and stressed during the first week of January when it feels as though everybody gets all task-oriented and serious. When Jupiter enters Aries on the 22nd you will feel some movement in your life.

CANCER (JUN21-JUL 20) The new moon in Capricorn on the 4th is powerful for you -- jeez, there is so much cardinal energy flying about! Sun, Moon, Pluto, Mars, and the North Lunar Node are all in Capricorn, and Saturn is in Libra. On January 22nd, Jupiter enters Aries. All this cardinal energy makes this a very intense month for you, and then on the 19th there is a full moon in the last moments of Cancer. Yow! It is imperative that you use the new moon on the 4th to ground yourself and focus on your plans and vision for the month. Work demands and family pressures are likely to be piling up and you are feeling stressed. Know that Jupiter and Uranus are changing the landscape even as you're just beginning to see it, so don't be attached to outcome during this period.

LEO (JUL21-AUG 20) The month starts off with a powerful new moon in Capricorn which in addition to emphasizing hard work and planning also heightens your creative vision. So make sure that when you're spending time on changing curtain rods that you also spend time envisioning your creative projects. You'll pay later if you give your creative self short shrift! Having said that, it is a great time for making concrete plans and setting goals. Jupiter and Uranus are conjunct this month, giving your life a pleasant sense of serendipity. Watch your physical energy around the 22-25th when a Sun-Mars conjunction in your opposite sign could inspire you to overdo it at the gym....

VIRGO (AUG 21-SEPT 20) The new moon in Capricorn on the 4th brings the capacity for tremendous focus and generation of plans and ideas. Go for it! It is an extraordinary lunation with a pigpile of planets in Capricorn -- this earthy sign complements your own ability to be most at home dealing with the real world. Yet Venus squares Neptune in this new moon, so you cannot lose sight of your vision and your desire for things to have greater meaning. What makes this new moon so powerful, actually, is the combination of the concrete with the transcendant. Trust your dreams right now, and let them unfold throughout the rest of the month. Try to just be still for the first couple of weeks of January -- there will be plenty of work and demands on you the second half of the month.

LIBRA (SEPT 21-OCT 21) I know I said that December was intense for you but January is intense in a different way. Last month, you could sit it out, but this month, it's all about you. First, let's talk about this new moon in Capricorn on the 4th. It's a fabulous new moon with all kinds of planets in Capricorn making a helluva angle to Saturn in Libra. You've got to get to work -- the pressure is on. What you need to do,however, is make plans, envision your goals, pray on them, sing to them, dance to them, and then let the work unfold. Do not get stressed out by that big huge Saturn Sun square the first week of the month. You have to trust this new moon to do its work for you, and then Jupiter will help too by mid month.... It's all about trust.

SCORPIO (OCT22-NOV21) This is a very interesting month for you. The Capricorn new moon on the 4th is intense and very productive. Use it to focus your desires, vision, and goals. Venus is at the end of your own sign and squares Neptune in this new moon, so you have to keep your dreams and yearnings in the forefront. Don't fall for the "it's all work and no play" thing that people often mistake about Capricorn energy. Capricorn, after all, is some of the earthiest energy in the zodiac, and earth means material reality -- our bodies, our homes, our earth. Enjoy all these things and revel in the splendor of life itself. Jupiter and Uranus are conjunct and bringing plenty of serendipity your way. Enjoy them as well.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV 22-DEC 21) This is an intense and slightly crazy month. You have to learn patience -- not easy for you, I know. On the one hand, here is this beautiful new moon in Capricorn on the 4th, bringing you the capacity for some real planning and realistic envisioning. On the other, Jupiter and Uranus are in a close conjunction and you're revved up and on the edge of your seat, awaiting surprise and serendipity. Jupiter enters Aries on the 22nd and don't let all that fire go to your head. You won't be able to help yourself, though - you'll be galloping off to all kinds of wild destinations, mentally and actually. So your job is to use that new moon to ground yourself and do some very good but very visionary planning so you have a structure in place when the Jupiter thing hits.

Your astrologer apologizes profusely for being late with this month's column. Mercury is retrograde! What can I say? --- I had technical difficulties.... I promise to have January's column up on time.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV 22-DEC21) The month begins with a gorgeous square of Mars to Jupiter and Uranus. Fun times in River City -- lots of exciting work and play. This combination is in effect for the new moon in Sag on December 5th, so the next two weeks will be excellent for fruitful activity and innovation. You will be busy and slightly crazed. Uranus is likely to bring us more surprising political events in combination with Mars, so you will have a lot to keep track of and opine about. Keep in mind that Mercury goes retrograde in early Capricorn on the 10th, edging back into late Sagittarius on the 18th. In fact, from the 18th til the 25th, Mercury makes a square to Uranus and Jupiter, and the full moon in Gemini and lunar eclipse happens on the 21st... Ooh la la. Expect big world events and very confusing communication. Talk about misunderstandings. Try not to be too reactive when people aggravate you --- everyone's mean streak may be a bit evident that week. How un-holiday-spirit-ish.

CAPRICORN (DEC21-JAN 19) Very interesting. There is a lot going on this month for you personally as well as for the whole planet. The new moon on December 5th brings us a Mercury-Pluto conjunction in early degrees of Capricorn plus a dynamic Mars square of Jupiter and Uranus. You'll be thinking very deeply about innovative and astounding ideas. Mercury and Pluto bring tremendous focus and also the temptation to engage in extremely paranoid thinking. (Not you!) Mars enters your own sign on the 8th and so you will feel a bit less crazed and a bit more productive. Mercury goes retrograde on the 10th for 3 weeks and for the first week it's retrograde in Capricorn. It will slide back past Pluto and then into Sag where it squares Jupiter and Uranus in time for the full moon in Gemini. Watch your words and take all information you receive with a big fat grain of retrograde salt.

AQUARIUS (JAN 20-FEB 19) Uranus, your ruling planet, goes direct after a long stretch of retrograde on the 5th, the day of a new moon. Things will start jumping in your life and in the world, especially since Mars will be squaring Uranus and Jupiter during the first week of December. You should feel a release and a sense of movement in some ideas and projects that have been difficult to bring into fruition. Then, just to bug you, Mercury goes retrograde on December 10th, first in Capricorn and then moving back into Sagittarius where it squares Jupiter and Uranus. (Keep in mind the recent release by Wikileaks occurred when Mercury squared those two planets...) So communication is going to be c-raz-y, especially in the week before Christmas. And yes, I'd expect travel plans to go haywire and your laptop to crash.

PISCES (FEB 20-MARCH19) I know, you just want to chill out and cozy up to your fireplace without a care in the world. Well I hate to say it, but the world is full of cares right now, and Mars, Jupiter and Uranus, the new moon on the 5th, the lunar eclipse and full moon on the 21st all conspire to make the pace of world events fast and furious and to make you slightly nuts. Oh, and did I mention Mercury retrograde? Yes, that too. You remember the drill -- it's dreamtime for the mind, so forget about plans and linear communication. This will be in effect from December 10th til 29th. Those carefully made holiday travel plans? Let's see!

ARIES (MAR22-APR 20) Things are hopping in your life: Mars in Sag is squaring Jupiter and Uranus, creating a lot of exciting possibilities and changes. Once Uranus goes direct on the 5th - coinciding with the new moon -- you'll sense a welcome release of pent up energies and plans. Then Mars enters Capricorn and quickly catches up to Pluto, while Mercury also enters Capricorn, going retrograde on the 10th and piling onto the Mars-Pluto conjunction. Although this could be a formula for bellicosity, for you it is an opportunity for building and for getting huge amounts of work done if you can channel this immense force into productivity. But all month long communication will be a thorny issue, between Mercury retrograde and the full moon on the 21st which is in the last degree of Gemini. Watch your words and watch out for misinterpreting others.

TAURUS (APR20- MAY21) This is not the easiest month for you. You have come out of the Venus retrograde period with some clarity about what you want and how to get there, and now along come Mars and Uranus and Jupiter throwing your plans up in the air. And then there is Mercury retrograde starting on December 10th. Talk about needing to go with the flow - that is essential for you this month. There is a lot of big-scale change occurring in the world and so you have to maintain flexibility right now. It's possible to get a great deal of work done between the 11th and 17th as long as you can move really intuitively. Communication is central for the second half of the month and try to be calm and centered in the midst of massive misunderstandings. It isn't personal!

GEMINI (MAY21-JUN20) The Sagittarian energy continues this month. Use the fabulous New Moon in sag on the 5th to ground your vision for what you want fulfillment to look like. Then let Uranus' turn from retrograde to direct release some pent up energy so you can see movement in parts of your life that have felt stuck. Take care of loose ends before Mercury goes retrograde on the 10th. It starts its retrograde pass in Capricorn and by the 18th moves back into Sagittarius, where it will drive you crazy if you are unable to go with the flow of it. Don't be distressed if your holiday travel plans change completely. Follow your intuition and don't fight the changes, especially around the full moon in Gemini on the 21st. Be aware of everyone's propensity for miscommunication during this period.

CANCER (JUN21-JUL20) December feels exciting and a bit stressful -- Mars and Uranus and Jupiter open up a lot of possibilities the first week of the month. Use the new moon on the 5th to envision some new directions for yourself. Then the hard work sets in when Mars enters Capricorn on the 8th and quickly joins up with Pluto to make you an organizing powerhouse. Avoid power struggles, though, especially once Mercury turns retrograde on the 10th. Remember that during Mercury retrograde you can't make big decisions but only go with the flow of what you're seeing emerge. The potential for personal misunderstandings is huge, and make sure you are not triggered needlessly by what people say to you.

LEO (JUL21-AUG 20) The Mars square of Uranus and Jupiter releases of lot of energy during the first week of December. Use the new moon in Sag on the 5th to try to harness the possibilities, because once Mars enters Capricorn on the 8th you'll have the opportunity to set some goals and accomplish them with great gusto. That is, as long as you are not undone by Mercury going retrograde on the 10th when it interrupts your great Mercury Pluto focus. Just go with it -- god knows, you can't do anything else. Be aware that this Mercury retrograde is rife with the potential for mishandling information, especially around the full moon on the 21st. Watch what you say and try not to overreact to what others say: it's a global condition!

VIRGO (AUG 21-SEPT20) You will be full of plans and action and then, bam! Mercury retrograde throws you for a loop. You have to just go with it -- it begins on December 10th, and you'll be annoyed at having your concentration interrupted. But go with it and use it for creative inspiration. Be aware that information is a hot commodity this month -- what people know and don't know will be an issue. If people have entrusted you with confidences, make sure you're handling them well and respectfully. Expect your travel plans to be subject to all kinds of changes, especially bad weather around the 21st. Use the Mars Saturn square at the end of the month to get some very nudge-y work done.

LIBRA (SEPT 21-OCT 21) This is am intense month and you should just stay home. You'll be tempted at the beginning of the month to go on some trip or do something unplanned, but honey, stay put. The influences are just too changeable and slightly crazy. You would do better staying home and thinking about them rather than directly engaging. Keep in mind that Mercury goes retrograde on December 10th, so whatever people thought they were doing they won't be doing anyway. This Mercury retrograde is a good time for you to go on a silent retreat or something and just stay away from speech all together. The potential for misunderstanding is just too great. But -- you can get great work done between the 11th and 17th and also at the end of the month when Mars squares Saturn.

SCORPIO (OCT22-NOV21) Uranus turns direct on the 5th on the new moon in Sagittarius. Put your thinking cap on and make some plans! Hatch some ideas! Consider what you really want to be doing with your life. Just don;t be too attached to meeting those goals this month, because for all your Mars in Capricorn get-it-done desires, Mercury retrograde will change up everything. So just go with the flow. Be aware around the full moon in Gemini on the 21st that people have no control whatsoever over what they say and how they say it -- you included. there will be a clash between all that linear Gemini-ness and the non-linear Mercury retrograde in Sag. Do not engage.

The Cast has to be one of the sickest clothing shop in NYC. As soon as you walk through the door, you know you've found a treasured gem. Whether it be for some killer original T's, denim and leather goods, or to the amazing vintage oddities this store definitely has a little something for everyone.

I first met Chuck and Elisa, (Owners and Designers), when I went to check out the shop with Katie and Brian from the Salon. I have to say, it's been a while since I have met such fun loving down to earth people! After a couple months of randomly stopping in to pick up a T, or running into each other in the neighborhood. We were constantly talking about music and upcoming shows. The next thing I know, we're tailgating at Iron Maiden, full on Heavy Metal Parking Lot style, and dancing on stage with Iggy Pop together in Atlantic City!! What a pleasant surprise it has been to make friends with genuine people, that share the same passion for music! Now they are both my clients as well!!

I just went in a few weeks ago and grabbed one of the new 'Cast' tote bags w/a Cramps pin and an awesome pair of Stevie Nicks style witch boots!! The highly anticipated womens 'Aloha From Hell' collection, has finally made it's way into the shop which gets me so amped! LIBRA (SEPT 21-OCT 21)Now that Saturn has become unstuck from Pluto and Uranus, it is moving at a pretty good clip through Libra. During the first few days of October, Saturn hangs out with the Sun, leaving you feeling kind of serious and responsible. Together with the last days of the Mars-Venus conjunction, Saturn and the Sun facilitate work getting done. But you may be feeling a bit gloomy. And besides, Venus comes to a screeching halt before it turns retrograde, so things feel unsettled and slightly weird. The new moon on the 7^th is in your sign, so use it for some reflection as you prepare for 40 days of Venus retrograde. Mars and Pluto make a powerful angle on this new moon, which doesn't bode well for the world staying calm this month. Remember that Venus retrograde can be kind of delicious in that important things are revealed to you about your real desires. And this happens while Venus retrograde brings the focus on intimacy anyway. So this should be a fruitful time for you as long as you can take advantage of the opportunity provided by Venus retrograde to allow your inner values and needs to surface. Be particularly aware and conscious during the last week of October, when desire and yearning run high.

AQUARIUS (JAN 20-FEB 19) Jupiter and Uranus continue their retrograde march, stirring things up in your life and bringing a lot of change. The beginning of the month feels serious - because it is! Saturn and Sun are conjunct, making the world feel a bit weighty. As we approach Venus going retrograde on the 8^th, Venus slows almost to a standstill while Mars keeps moving. Things feel unsettled and weird. Take advantage of the new moon in Libra on the 7^th to get ready for Venus retrograde. Try to use this time to reflect on your life, on what is working and what is out of sync. Try not to be so overwhelmed by what occurs politically, (you political junkie, you!) that you miss this extraordinary time to learn how to bring your life into alignment with your own internal popular values. Let your inner populace speak!

PISCES (FEB 20-MARCH19)The month begins with Mercury in Virgo opposing Jupiter and Uranus, who turned retrograde and are back in Pisces. Your feeling pressured by the Sun and Saturn but Mercury's action brings you a lot of interesting information and possibilities. Your head is exploding - or it would if you weren't so tired. In fact, you're working a ton but it is a labor of love, so it's all right. Don't forget to take care of yourself because Saturn can suppress your vital energy a bit at the start of this month. The big news for you this month, of course, is Venus going retrograde on October 8^th. You have forty days of getting in touch with what you love to do. No big decisions-just let your needs and desires become very clear. By the time some instability hits at the end of October you will have the strength and clarity you need.

ARIES (MAR22-APR 20) Saturn is cruising in Libra now, after being rather stuck in place in its heavy angles to Uranus and Pluto all year. Libra is your opposite sign, and Saturn's presence in it crystallizes for you how to structure important relationships in your life. The beginning of the month, however, starts with a lot of work. Don't get too depleted and be sure to take care of yourself in the midst of it. You're feeling pressured from external commitments and yet your unconscious self is starting to make itself known through desires and passions that may not conform to the life you've built. All this becomes very evident once Venus goes retrograde on the 8^th. If there are any parts of your life that are out of alignment with your deepest values, those parts will become excruciatingly clear this month. Work with it, learn from it, and do not make yourself crazy about it. Remember, Venus' lesson is one of relatedness.

TAURUS (APR20- MAY21)Oh, honey. What a month! Just get through the first week of October when you feel pressured and perhaps very weighed down. Once Venus goes retrograde on the 8^th, you will have forty delicious days for your deep Taurean values to come to the surface. If there are parts of your life that are not satisfying, it will become acutely obvious. No rash decisions, please - just deep reflection and honoring of your passions and deepest creative impulses. Venus is your planet, after all, so this pass of Venus retrograde is important; it is even more important for you because it is in Scorpio, your opposite sign. Taurus and Scorpio both have to do with identifying and owning values - this is an earthy process in Taurus and a watery one in Scorpio. It's all about relationship and connection and life -affirming sensuality in both. The end of October will be unsettling and things you need to address with your deep Venusian passions will become evident.

GEMINI (MAY21-JUN20) The month starts with Mercury making an intense opposition to Jupiter and Uranus. You are jumping out of your skin! Take note of these fleeting notions about taking strange journeys and moving to the other side of the planet, but don't act on them.... just yet! Venus is about to go retrograde on the 8^th and so the week leading up to it is a bit strange. The Sun and Saturn make you a bit depressed, and Venus slowing to a standstill gives you a sense of expectation. Really work with Venus retrograde once it begins. Really. It will help clarify what it is you really want in your life. Parts of your life that are out of whack will become painfully obvious. I know, that doesn't sound great, but it is. This is a time when you get to connect with your deepest passions. Let 'em rip!

CANCER (JUN21-JUL20) Saturn in Libra is stirring up a lot of issues for you about partnerships and boundaries, espcially the first week of October, when Saturn and the Sun get join forces to make you very committed to your Cancerian defenses. feeling a bit threatened, are you? Or perhaps just a bit sad. Let yourself be nurtured by the new moon in Libra on the 7th, and then allow Venus retrograde in Scorpio to help you identify your core values about relationships and what you want from them. This should be a very fruitful month for you emotionally if you can Venus do its work!

LEO (JUL21-AUG 20)The first week of October will make you cranky if you have the time to think about it --which you won't, because Mercury opposes Jupiter and Uranus and you may find yourself in some grand adventure of mind, body or spirit. Then Venus goes retrograde, and in Scorpio, no less, which has a strong connection to Leo. You will be challenged during this period - you will have to stretch in order to identify your values and take a stand on them. It is a time for reflection, for seeing your life up against someone else's version of a life, and it could be unsettling as hell but very rich. Go with your passions; allow your creativity to take up space. The end of October will bring some instability to the world and perhaps to your life, and you will have an acute sense of needing to march to the beat of a different drummer.

VIRGO (AUG 21-SEPT20)The beginning of the month is stressful and you find yourself under some pressure. Things also feel weird as Venus gets ready to go retrograde and is nearly at a standstill. You are waiting for the other shoe to drop. Staring on October 8^th, you have forty days in which you get to really focus on your deep values. It is not a time of action but of reflection, especially about intimacy and relationships. What is working? What isn't? What do you really need and want. Venus is essentially about relatedness, and in this retrograde stretch it is in the sign Scorpio, raising issues of intimacy and power. This is a great opportunity to get clear about the relationships you're in. Don't be alarmed by any instability in situations at the end of the month - that is when you will get very clear!

Venus will be retrograde from Oct 8th til Nov 18th. And in Scorpio, no less!

Personally, I like Venus retrograde. It is a time of reflection in which we sense the congruence or lack thereof between our core values and those of society. Let that creative tension rip, I say!

But Venus is a complex symbol, and so its retrograde pass is significant personally as well as politically. Venusis said to "rule" two signs -- Taurus and Libra. The Taurean Venus is about earthiness and instinctual values, whereas its Libran manifestation has a bit more to so with esthetics and social norms.

When it goes retrograde the more hidden or unconscious aspects of Venus rise to the surface.

Perhaps that's why the Mayans thought of Venus retrograde as a time to prepare for war.

As Venus moves retrograde, it comes into alignment with the Sun on October 29 and 30th. Global situations will become very unstable during the week following.

The week after the Venus retrograde conjunction to the Sun is known astrologically as a time of political tumult. It will have a major impact on the US midterm elections -- I hate to say it.Interestingly, Venus was also retrograde in Scorpio during the 2002 midterm elections when the Republicans took control of the Senate and the House. Then the "War on Terror" was a big topic, and the party of George Bush prevailed.

Now, eight years later, we have Republicans waging a war of terror on everyone who doesn't look or think like them. Maybe Venus retrograde will bring their comeuppance -- this astrologer certainly hopes so....

Venus begins its retrograde pass as it makes a square to President Obama's Sun. He does a like a good fight and so Venus retrograde may help him come out swinging. And keep your eyes on places around the world where diplomatic efforts could break through or break down...

Wondering why the last few days have felt so explosive and weird? The Sun is conjunct Saturn and squared the North Lunar Node, and they are all still close enough to Pluto to drag in some of its effect. The last days of September and the first few of October will be chunky and tense. However, it's a good time for getting work done. Venus and Mars -- which have been conjunct for over a month -- will only have one more week being such a sweet little bundle. Take advantage of it!

Having said that, during this first week of October when Venus slows down to almost a standstill, we all have a sense of expectation, a sense of something about to happen.

Hmm.

But have I actually said anything very good about Venus, have I?

Okay, okay! Use this forty-day period to reflect on what is really important to you. Be aware that you may feel out of sync, as feelings surface about what you really want and how you may not be getting it. This is a really good time to work on relationships. It is a really good time to develop clarity about your life, about what you really want.

And that's good, right?

The heart of my painting always starts with an animate or inanimate object that bears a spunky and alluring nature. While my interpretations make light of situations we go through, the natural expression and shape is never altered or exaggerated from how I found them to be. I simply illustrate the quirks of life that we might otherwise pay little attention to.

Spring Hofeldt’s studio is located in Red Hook, Brooklyn. She earned a BFA in Commercial Art at Central Missouri State Univ. in 2001, and has shown her paintings in galleries across the country. Interested in continually supporting the development of an arts community, she also curates exhibitions as a principle curator of Radar Curatorial.

Fringe is really getting around...

We are excited about our neighbor's, the Tenement Museum, expansion. And excited to be included in the photo collection on their construction billboards, along with other past and present Broome Street sights!

We've also heard that Fringe Salon was mentioned on a recent JetBlue in-flight entertainment program featuring the Lower East Side. We were mentioned along side Babycakes, Barrio Chino, and other local favorites.

Fringe at Fashion Week

Fashion week is coming soon! Fringe Salon stylists will be featuring their amazing hair styling at two top shows during fashion week.

On September 11 Fringe will be doing Vogue Magazine’s Fashion’s Night Out at Rockafeller Center. A Lucite stage is being built over the fountain in front of the Prometheus statue, which should be spectacular.

On September 15 Fringe stylists will be doing the Style Trek fashion show featuring 10 global designers.

Now Playing on the Lower East Side: Shakespeare in the Parking Lot

Here on the Lower East Side, there seems to be an endless variety of opportunities to see some art, experience some culture, and just have a great night out. One of the most interesting events going on in our neighborhood this summer is Shakespeare in the Parking Lot, a festival of free Shakespeare plays produced in the Fringe-adjacent municipal parking lot at Broome and Ludlow Streets.

Shakespeare in the Parking Lot is the creation of The Drilling CompaNY, an off- and off-off-Broadway production company that has been in operation since 1999. Intended as a downtown alternative to the Public Theater's well-known Shakespeare in the Park (which is also free, but for which one has to wait in line all morning for even a chance of getting tickets), the productions are sparse in the way of sets and costumes -- just as, of course, they would have been in Shakespeare's time -- but feature talented local actors and innovative directors, and promise a great night of theater in an unlikely setting.

This summer's season began with Love's Labour's Lost, an early comedy of the Bard's. This production imagined the action of the play occurring not at the Royal Court of 16th century France, but among aspiring rock stars at the Burning Man festival. Currently running is Julius Caesar (this blogger's personal favorite Shakespeare play), in which the main characters vie not for control of the Roman senate, but for leadership of an urban school board. Two of the most important figures in the play, Cassius and Mark Antony, are played by women.

The final performances of Julius Caesar happen this weekend, Thursday through Saturday nights at 8 pm. Chairs are provided but audience members are encouraged to bring their own if they prefer. Admission is free. While you're in the neighborhood, stop by Fringe and say hello!

Feels Like Home: New Works by Danielle Thillet

Danielle Thillet is an accomplished artist & illustrator, graduated from SUNY Purchase in 2006. Her work has been displayed in galleries all over New York and across the country. She has also been published in such magazines as Paracinema, Make/Shift and Shameless. She lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

Feels Like Home is a collection of brand new work partly inspired by the space at Fringe Salon. These delicately rendered watercolor drawings play with the notion of hair as a landscape and its own environment, as well as the presumed traditional role of women as keepers of the home and protectors of the family. This collection explores a plethora of variations on the theme with an air of whimsy and joy.

Bi-monthly we release an ad in Bust magazine showcasing our real life clients.

What's cookin' good lookin? For the new ad, our stylist Prissy had the idea to use our friends from Babycakes. Prissy provided super stylish haircuts/color to fit their creative personalities! We teamed up again with photographer Danielle St. Laurent. Babycakes is right next door to the salon and is our favorite vegan/allergy sensitive bakery! Our models from left to right are Evan Scott, a writer and BU Alumni, Lizz Hickey, an artist and SUNY Purchase grad, and Justin Natividad, a painter and Savannah College of Art and Design grad.
