Out and About at Canada Music Week!!!

Day1: Spent the afternoon checking out salons around the Yorkville area of downtown and navigating Toronto's underwhelming transit system (they still use tokens!!!).

After dinner in the Upper Beaches with family we took a $25 cab ride to Toronto's East Village/L.E.S. counterpart Queen West.

Starting at the uber cool Drake Hotel we caught a short set by Low Level Flight

Yet another expensive cab and we arrive at the Horseshoe Tavern, T.O.'s CBGB's and unofficial hub of the fest. While Gus talked shop with an up and coming group, Amos the Transparent, I enjoyed the set of an adorable 5-some called Green Go shortly before our good friends Hollerado worked the crowd into a wicked roar.

Almost 2 a.m., we walk the 7 blocks to The Bovine Sex Club. A grungy rock and roll bar where very cool dudes in leather biker vests with long hair and bad ass facial hair appropriately named Monster Truck, rocked out heavy metal like with songs about "..that bitch that won't get out of your bed in the morning..." and "...tits"

$30 more to get back to the "Upper East Side" for lights out at 4a.m.

Day 2: waited outside in windy rain for 40 minutes for a street car that never came, Saw 2 terrible bands, and was way too fed up to try and get into the 'Shoe for The Balconies Show.

Day 3: More shitty weather!!... Brunch with the bass player for The Junction at Brad's and a fresh brewed rooibos at Lit with the front man in the Parkslope/Cobblehill equivalent Roncesvalles hood. No street cars working in this area so a 14 block walk from the "subway" against the direction of the rain had me ruing the idea of doing this trip sans car. Later we tour an area recording studio where the owner explains that TTC really means Take The Car.

Dinner with the fam for vietnamese Pho, then off to Criminal Records for an in-store show from Hollerado. Hop back to the 'Shoe for the Balconies but are denied and make our way to The Mod Club for The Trews acoustic show. Feeling all warm and fuzzy from lead singer Colin MacDonald's pebble smooth voice we jump to The Drake for a little dance party before returning once more to the 'Shoe for a late night set by 2 Hours Traffic and The Junction. We lose an hour and then Boom! It's 4a.m. and it's time to fight in the rain for a handful of cabs !!

Festival Done!! back to N.Y.C where the subway never sleeps!!

Stitch Nation behind the scenes

No One's Land

I have been creating different variations of a mohawk on brazilian born artist, Priscilla De Carvahlo for many years.....

She, on the other hand, has been creating bold, bright and thought provoking collage city-scapes. She's won all kinds of grants and fellowships, and has been featured in all sorts of group and solo shows all over town!

Starting Wednesday, February 17th, you can get the full picture and possibly speak to the artist herself at Praxis on the Upper East side.

Opening reception starts at 6p.m and goes till 8p.m. and if you cant make that she'll be on display till March 20th.

Sneak Peak: Our New Bust Magazine Ad

Each month we release an ad in Bust magazine showcasing our real life clients.

Being a huge fan of the gorgeous shots by Amy's b.f.f. Danielle St. Laurent long before I joined the Fringe team, I was psyched when Amy asked if she could use my b.f.f and long time client Jill Flint, along with her handsome husband, visual artist Drew Conrad as the subjects of our next shoot.

We all got together on a sunny Sunday at Jill and Drew's apartment in the L.E.S. We had fun and mimosas while shooting the happy couple in their happy home. Sometimes, their bird Franklin got in the mix as well!

Being an actress (Royal Pains, Mercy, Nurse Jackie), Jill's hair goes through ALOT! Shortly after I joined Fringe I had to turn her silky dark brown locks to a youthful, natural looking blonde for 1 day of shooting the opening scenes of Capital Records and then turn it back to brown the next day!!



Now we keep her hair healthy with gentle products from Pureology and Kevin Murphy in addition to lots and lots of love.

Knit Happens!!!

Fringe's partnership with Bust Magazine goes way back and a couple of months ago I teamed up with co-founder, Debbie Stoller, to do a photo shoot for the newest addition to the Stich n Bitch universe.

We got together at Gary's Loft in the Willy B with photographer Jack Deutch, and stylist, designer, blogger extraordinaire Keiko Lynn, and played dress up with all the bright, fun pieces in the collection made with Debbie's %100 natural "Stitch Nation" yarn!

Far Away Friends play Piano's...

Recently, XM radio's indie and emerging artist station Verge 87 released there top 20 picks for '09.

Lo and behold, a few songs from some of Gus' projects hold top billing!

The #1 spot held by Hollerado (featured right here last October)!

2 other spots are held by The Junction, a trio from Toronto who happen to be playing at our local L.E.S venue Piano's tonight, February 9th and tomorrow the 1oth!!! The boys go on around 12:30 in the showroom, and there's a cool dance party upstairs!!

Marlene's Curly Hair Tip #2

So welcome to a snowy February! I hope everyone had a great holiday season!

Now that the winter is fully upon us, some, or maybe all of you may be fighting dry and frizzy curls...what with the hat head, cold air and radiator heat...A good defensive trick is to leave some or all of your conditioner in your hair (hopefully you are using a more natural, good quality one...see my post from Nov. 9). This will help keep your hair more supple without having to apply a ton of other products after it dries. So, after you "shampoo", gently run the conditioner through your hair with your fingers to detangle, and then scrunch it all in (you should do this with your head flipped upside down to get the best curl). If you feel like there's too much conditioner left on your roots, then just gently rinse a little bit out so you're leaving most on the ends. Now go ahead and scrunch your curl styling product in and air or diffuse dry. Good luck and I'll see you next time!

Our good friend Toby Cayouette, is not only part of the hottest francophone band from Montreal(China Town) and Host/Founder/DJ of one of Montreal's most successful parties ("The Mod Club"). He is also a brilliant photographer!

While he was here in 08 recording with Gus, he traveled all over our great city and captured some truly unique NYC landscapes that blew us away!

Last week Gus and I hopped over to the south side of Willy B for a small prints show at K&K. 16 emerging photographers from N.Y., S.F, L.A. and Toby from Montreal are showing 5 unframed prints each. Original and interesting pieces of art all available for only $100 (the price of a haircut;) through March 22nd.

Toby's scenes from the very north of Canada are on display here at the this tiny gallery that was packed to the point of overflow on opening night. It was difficult to get a good look at everyones stuff but local, nyc based, Elizabeth Weinberg's collection grabbed my attention as well.

Take a "date night" stroll through the show before heading over to Dressler, Marlow and Sons, Peter Luger or Diner for dinner. Gallery open Fri-Mon, 12-6pm.

Pal Shazar Art Opening was a Blast!

The art opening party at Fringe last Thursday, featured the soft-toned paintings and delicately intense musical performance of Pal Shazar.

With just an electric guitar backing her, she belted out a wonderfully intimate short set that reminded me of one of my favorite bands, The Blow. Many of the paintings are already sold but they will be on display at Fringe for the next month...

Indigo, Metalic Pink, and Tiffany Blue, Oh My! Fringe has a new interior by Samantha Gore

    Fringe has just gone through a nice little re-do thanks to Interior Designer Extraordinaire Samantha Gore, and expert at giving a place a feeling of space.   
    I had first seen Samantha work her magic on my own apartment. Sometimes living arrangements need to change, either you are moving in with a loved one, having  a baby, or just trying to get organized. Immediately after finding out I was pregnant, I stared scoping Craig’s List for a bigger apartment... but the truth is I love my place.
    It suits me. I have the perfect commute,  my favorite restaurants are nearby, my laundry mat, playgrounds, you name it. I realized quickly that I didn’t want to move, but like all New Yorkers, how
was I going deal with the space issue? It just so happened that i was discussing my dilemma with my client, Samantha Gore and she agreed to come over and do a simple re-do of my place in order to give
it balance and a feeling of space.




    We hung out in the apartment for a few moments, while I chased my two year old around the
apartment. In two hours we discussed all of the possibilities of how to use my own furniture, instead of spending tons of money on new pieces. She decided which pieces one would want to see, and others that should be camouflaged. Samantha got hands-on right away, organizing  some of my storage spaces, moving our vintage salon chairs into a prominent place by the window... and voila!, the space was transformed. She left me with a list of a few other things to move and paint on my own with my husband. I can’t tell you how many people come in and say, “Wow, your apartment looks great. You look like you have so much more room.”

    I loved my new space so much that I called her in the first days of the new year, and asked her to
help me freshen up Fringe Salon. She reinvented our use of colors, added parlor style mirrors on the back walls, and streamlined our displays. The place looks  great, and feels more spacious. If you didn’t know how much of a difference a simple redo can make, just check out Samantha’s website:

You have got to get yourself one of the wonderful hats made by my client Lola. If you have to cover up your locks you might as well do it with style.
Lola hats are sold at Bergdorf but I recommend going to the Cloth sample sale this weekend in Brooklyn.

Can Social-light Become Socialite?

When it comes to the social scene in NYC, I've stayed under the radar; the work/play balance leans heavily toward sitting with my laptop. In an effort to up my game, I'm devoting at least one night a week to exploring New York after dark.

Don't let "Gossip Girl" fool you, kids. There's much more of this apple to bite than just the Upper East Side. And as I found out, even their cast & crew enjoys a good romp on Fringe Salon's Lower East Side neighborhood.

One Friday night started with dinner at Jane Restaurant with indie singer-songwriter Tony Lucca and our good friend Scotty. After the last bite of my ahi tuna was officially no more, we headed to Sullivan Hall for music by New York's own Matt Lowell, Nashville resident Josh Hoge, and my aforementioned friend (and former PR client), L.A.'s Tony Lucca. Amazing performances by all followed by the obligatory late-night NY tradition of stopping for a slice afterward.

Near 1am, I met up with girlfriends at their favorite Lower East Side bar, The Sixth Ward. After finding them near the pool table, I also spotted another familiar face: Chace Crawford of "Gossip Girl" was (gasp) quite a few zip codes below the fictional Nate Archibald's UES stomping ground. By the time the 8-ball hit a corner pocket, I could say with 100% certainty: yes; he really is that pretty in person.

At 3am, I made a stop at my personal favorite LES Sweet Tooth Fairy, Sugar (and really, the only one open at 3am) for a red velvet cupcake before hopping into a taxi back to Brooklyn. This Chicago native turned New Yorker may not be ready for socialite status, but social-medium is definitely on the horizon.

Fringe Goes Bust: December 6th Event

The best craft fair in NYC is happening this Sunday, December 6th, at the Metropolitan. From 10am to 8pm you can browse over 200 vendors that are personally selling their handmade wares and get your Holiday shopping done in one day! There will be something for everyone, including: free Joe coffee and goodie bags in the morning; animal adoptions from the ACC; Two Boots Pizza; plus raffles and much more. Neighborhood Spotlight: BabyCakes

We visit BabyCakes pretty much daily and not just because they're right next door (we share the same 248 Broome address). Their vegans treats, strong coffee, and Kombucha drinks are a favorite at our salon. Founder Erin McKenna (photographed at left with Top Chef's Tom Colicchio) says it best: "In a city dominated by cupcakes overflowing with sugar, flour and butter cream, it’s easy for those with persnickety diets to feel left out." Instead of eggs, dairy, sugar, and wheat, BabyCakes creates their equally yummy baked goods with cold-pressed coconut oil, agave nectar, garbanzo flour, and spelt. We’ve been rockin’ singer Kendall Jane Meade’s locks for years, and we also happen to love her honest, melodic folk-pop. She’s released three full-length albums, had songs on Grey’s Anatomy and plays often around downtown NYC and Brooklyn. This song, Dream Another Day, is our favorite tune from her recent album ART PROJECT, which Spin Magazine called “her best album yet.” Buy it on iTunes asap!

Fringe Goes Grunge with Michael Lavine

Our friend, photographer Michael Lavine, is celebrating the release of his new book, GRUNGE. With a release party at Bowery Hotel on Tuesday, the much anticipated collection gives another voice and view to an era in music & style that made an impact worldwide.

More than a decade after his death, alienated, awkward, heavily eye-lined Kurt Cobain continues to sit front and center in the arena of popular culture, as the subject of books, music, fashion, gossip, and inspiration for major motion pictures and documentaries.
Together with flannelsporting, music-obsessed communities emerging (in the late 1980s and early 1990s) from the chilly Pacific Northwest, Nirvana, Sound Garden, and Pearl Jam changed the scene with wild aggressive sounds and truly alternative records.
Featuring photographs by Michael Lavine, author Thurston Moore (of Sonic Youth) writes about the discovery of Seattle punk youth, the seminal bands that defined the movement, the exploitation of the subculture, and the backlash of grunge.
