February Astrology Forecast

AQUARIUS (JAN 20-FEB 19) Kind of a stunning month, if you like dramatic change, unexpected events, and lots of popular uprisings. February kicks off with the Venus- Uranus square making a potent aspect to the February 2nd new moon. Fun, excitement, and a dose of the unexpected - not to mention really bad weather. Venus and Uranus stimulate what you really want and need and their influence continues for a good couple of weeks. Meanwhile Venus enters Capricorn on the 4^th and squares Jupiter: you're feeling good, happy, and solid. Relish this delicious combination which, together with the North Lunar Node, brings a wonderful sense of being loved. And your Aquarian self has no choice but to take it in - especially when Venus catches up to Pluto and you get all deep and mushy.All month long Mars marches forward in Aquarius in step with the Sun. This conjunction brings you a lot of physical activity; you're doing a ton of things and not always paying attention. This can make you a bit physically vulnerable so be mindful while sculpting those abs - don't drop any weights on your toes! From the 15^th to 20^th you get all serious about relationships when Venus squares Saturn, perhaps missing someone. But it's fleeting -- right at the end of the month several planets conspire to get your Aquarian brain firing on its many cylinders again.

Sneak Preview

So... I love the new ad in Bust.  One, because I love the two stylists, Katie Dolinar (one of TimeOut NY's best stylists of 2010) and Rosie Sumstad (our newest, wonderful addition to the floor);  two, because the talented Mr. Brian Fisher did the hair; and three, because the clothes are borrowed from our great neighbor TG-170!
Not to toot my own horn, I'll toot for Danielle St. Laurent.  I love, love, love the photos.  Danny and I have been collaborating together for more than 15 years on photo shoots... What can I say, she's awesome! And this is one of my favs:

Amy's client of more than 10 years, Carolyn Babula, got married at the end of October and she stumbled upon this great photographer to do the photos, who by chance happened to be one of our clients. Talk about seredipitous! She looks beautiful thanks to Rosie and Amy who did the hair and Laura for the great photos!

January Astrology Forecast

Happy New Year!

2011 brings us the start of a 7 year Uranus-Pluto square.

No, that's not a typo! Seven years of change!

The year starts off on January 4th with a solar eclipse on the new moon in Capricorn.

This is a fascinating eclipse -- even if it isn't visible in North America -- because it interacts with the chart of the US in a very big way. The eclipsing Sun and Moon make an exact opposition to the 13-degrees-of-Cancer US Sun....And, the Sun and Moon make major angles to Mars, Saturn, and Pluto.

This eclipse is about work and the lack of it. By that I mean unemployment. Unfortunately there is likely to be another round of reports about increasing joblessness. (The economic situation doesn't improve until after the Jupiter-Saturn square in April. ) In addition, the planetary configuration on the eclipse indicates a kind of standstill... Hmmm, that could mean the US Congress and its penchant for gridlock.

Yet the planets in play do signify real roll-up-your-sleeves hard work, so it is a great time to focus on goals for the year, as long as we can live with the fact that things appear to be utterly stuck.

But how about some good news?

Even though the last time Uranus and Pluto were squared in cardinal signs was between 1929 and 1933, do not despair! This combination is about change, first and foremost. Uranus enters Aries in March, making a square to Pluto pretty much on and off through 2018.

I know, how can a girl wrap her brain around this? For starters, our brains will be very much at issue once Jupiter enters Aries on January 22. For the next couple of months, Jupiter and Uranus will be conjunct in and around the very beginning of Aries. Aries has to do with the head and the brain, and Jupiter in that sign signifies an expansion of our thinking about .... our thinking. With Uranus in the picture expect breakthroughs about autism, alzheimers, brain injury, etc.

But about that good news....

2011 looks a lot better than 2010 and 2009, even with the Uranus-Pluto action. For example, apart from Mercury, there will be no retrograde passes of a personal planet.

Keep in mind that Saturn and Jupiter are both cruising ahead and away from the clutches of Pluto, and even their opposition in April isn't a bad thing at all. Personally, I like Saturn and Jupiter together -- they have a certain groundedness together and they balance out each other's unpleasant tendencies. As for Uranus and Pluto -- expect the unexpected, personally and globally.

However...Uranus in Aries may indeed fan the flames of individualism and so we may see the Tea Party's lunacy gain strength at least while Jupiter is also in Aries. (Thank god, Jupiter enters Taurus in June....)

There is repression with Uranus and Pluto but also revolution.... These combinations bode ill for immigration rights in the US unless we can harness the potential for effective community organizing that is indicated by Uranus and Pluto. don;t mourn organize

Mostly Uranus and Pluto have to do with cracks and fissures. Things will break open under this transit. Some of it will be revelatory and positive and some of it will be destructive. The core essence of things will become visible. That probably includes seeing plenty of lava flow.

We'll have seven years to figure it out!

Your January Forecast...

december's astrology forecast -- better late than never!

Your astrologer apologizes profusely for being late with this month's column. Mercury is retrograde! What can I say? --- I had technical difficulties.... I promise to have January's column up on time.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV 22-DEC21) The month begins with a gorgeous square of Mars to Jupiter and Uranus. Fun times in River City -- lots of exciting work and play. This combination is in effect for the new moon in Sag on December 5th, so the next two weeks will be excellent for fruitful activity and innovation. You will be busy and slightly crazed. Uranus is likely to bring us more surprising political events in combination with Mars, so you will have a lot to keep track of and opine about. Keep in mind that Mercury goes retrograde in early Capricorn on the 10th, edging back into late Sagittarius on the 18th. In fact, from the 18th til the 25th, Mercury makes a square to Uranus and Jupiter, and the full moon in Gemini and lunar eclipse happens on the 21st... Ooh la la. Expect big world events and very confusing communication. Talk about misunderstandings. Try not to be too reactive when people aggravate you --- everyone's mean streak may be a bit evident that week. How un-holiday-spirit-ish.

Wink Wink Pony was born in a studio in Bushwick, Brooklyn and is the brainchild of Georgia native Reba Massey. It is a collection of characters dubbed "GENERATION @" inspired by today's text savvy, blog happy, web crawling youth culture.

A world where creators, activists, fashionistas, & wanna bees all live together on LOLLIPOP HILL. RoseMary MilkShake, Charlie CoCoButter Bean, and KeKe Couture are just a few of the characters you're sure to fall in love with and bring a smile to your face.

Since 2008, hundreds of New York City’s savviest librarians and bibliophiles have flocked to Brooklyn for the nerdiest party of the year: the Desk Set’s annual Biblioball. Photo archivists mingle with children’s book authors to the sounds of the city’s finest DJs spinning soul 45s. Live music follows a sexy trapeze act, and guests win big in the Fancy Pants Raffle–all to support LIT, and their work to provide programming for incarcerated and detained youth–only at the Biblioball.

The Cast has to be one of the sickest clothing shop in NYC. As soon as you walk through the door, you know you've found a treasured gem. Whether it be for some killer original T's, denim and leather goods, or to the amazing vintage oddities this store definitely has a little something for everyone.



I first met Chuck and Elisa, (Owners and Designers), when I went to check out the shop with Katie and Brian from the Salon. I have to say, it's been a while since I have met such fun loving down to earth people! After a couple months of randomly stopping in to pick up a T, or running into each other in the neighborhood. We were constantly talking about music and upcoming shows. The next thing I know, we're tailgating at Iron Maiden, full on Heavy Metal Parking Lot style, and dancing on stage with Iggy Pop together in Atlantic City!! What a pleasant surprise it has been to make friends with genuine people, that share the same passion for music! Now they are both my clients as well!!

I just went in a few weeks ago and grabbed one of the new 'Cast' tote bags w/a Cramps pin and an awesome pair of Stevie Nicks style witch boots!! The highly anticipated womens 'Aloha From Hell' collection, has finally made it's way into the shop which gets me so amped! If you've never cruised by, you should, it's totally worth it!! :) **ROCK ON!!**--Prissy

October Astrology Forecast

Venus goes retrograde on October 8th! The planet of love is also a planet of clashing values.

LIBRA (SEPT 21-OCT 21)Now that Saturn has become unstuck from Pluto and Uranus, it is moving at a pretty good clip through Libra. During the first few days of October, Saturn hangs out with the Sun, leaving you feeling kind of serious and responsible. Together with the last days of the Mars-Venus conjunction, Saturn and the Sun facilitate work getting done. But you may be feeling a bit gloomy. And besides, Venus comes to a screeching halt before it turns retrograde, so things feel unsettled and slightly weird. The new moon on the 7th is in your sign, so use it for some reflection as you prepare for 40 days of Venus retrograde. Mars and Pluto make a powerful angle on this new moon, which doesn't bode well for the world staying calm this month. Remember that Venus retrograde can be kind of delicious in that important things are revealed to you about your real desires. Meanwhile the North Lunar Node heads right into a conjunction with Pluto this month, deepening relationships in all the right ways.

The heart of my painting always starts with an animate or inanimate object that bears a spunky and alluring nature. While my interpretations make light of situations we go through, the natural expression and shape is never altered or exaggerated from how I found them to be. I simply illustrate the quirks of life that we might otherwise pay little attention to.

Spring Hofeldt’s studio is located in Red Hook, Brooklyn. She earned a BFA in Commercial Art at Central Missouri State Univ. in 2001, and has shown her paintings in galleries across the country. Interested in continually supporting the development of an arts community, she also curates exhibitions as a principle curator of Radar Curatorial.

Fringe is really getting around...

We are excited about our neighbor's, the Tenement Museum, expansion. And excited to be included in the photo collection on their construction billboards, along with other past and present Broome Street sights!

We've also heard that Fringe Salon was mentioned on a recent JetBlue in-flight entertainment program featuring the Lower East Side. We were mentioned along side Babycakes, Barrio Chino, and other local favorites.

Fringe at Fashion Week

Fashion week is coming soon! Fringe Salon stylists will be featuring their amazing hair styling at two top shows during fashion week.

On September 11 Fringe will be doing Vogue Magazine’s Fashion’s Night Out at Rockafeller Center. A Lucite stage is being built over the fountain in front of the Prometheus statue, which should be spectacular.

On September 15 Fringe stylists will be doing the Style Trek fashion show featuring 10 global designers.

Now Playing on the Lower East Side: Shakespeare in the Parking Lot

Here on the Lower East Side, there seems to be an endless variety of opportunities to see some art, experience some culture, and just have a great night out. One of the most interesting events going on in our neighborhood this summer is Shakespeare in the Parking Lot, a festival of free Shakespeare plays produced in the Fringe-adjacent municipal parking lot at Broome and Ludlow Streets.

Shakespeare in the Parking Lot is the creation of The Drilling CompaNY, an off- and off-off-Broadway production company that has been in operation since 1999. Intended as a downtown alternative to the Public Theater's well-known Shakespeare in the Park (which is also free, but for which one has to wait in line all morning for even a chance of getting tickets), the productions are sparse in the way of sets and costumes -- just as, of course, they would have been in Shakespeare's time -- but feature talented local actors and innovative directors, and promise a great night of theater in an unlikely setting.

This summer's season began with Love's Labour's Lost, an early comedy of the Bard's. This production imagined the action of the play occurring not at the Royal Court of 16th century France, but among aspiring rock stars at the Burning Man festival. Currently running is Julius Caesar (this blogger's personal favorite Shakespeare play), in which the main characters vie not for control of the Roman senate, but for leadership of an urban school board. Two of the most important figures in the play, Cassius and Mark Antony, are played by women.

The final performances of Julius Caesar happen this weekend, Thursday through Saturday nights at 8 pm. Chairs are provided but audience members are encouraged to bring their own if they prefer. Admission is free. While you're in the neighborhood, stop by Fringe and say hello!

 Feels Like Home: New Works by Danielle Thillet

     Danielle Thillet is an accomplished artist & illustrator, graduated from SUNY Purchase in 2006.  Her work has been displayed in galleries all over New York and across the country. She has also been published in such magazines as Paracinema, Make/Shift and Shameless. She lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

Feels Like Home is a collection of brand new work partly inspired by the space at Fringe Salon. These delicately rendered watercolor drawings play with the notion of hair as a landscape and its own environment, as well as the presumed traditional role of women as keepers of the home and protectors of the family. This collection explores a plethora of variations on the theme with an air of whimsy and joy.

A haircut can make a big difference

You may not have the length to donate to Locks of Love... but you do donate your hair clippings when you get your hair cut at Fringe Salon.

Sneak Peek: Fringe Salon's Summer BUST Magazine Ad

Bi-monthly we release an ad in Bust magazine showcasing our real life clients.

What's cookin' good lookin? For the new ad, our stylist Prissy had the idea to use our friends from Babycakes. Prissy provided super stylish haircuts/color to fit their creative personalities! We teamed up again with photographer Danielle St. Laurent. Babycakes is right next door to the salon and is our favorite vegan/allergy sensitive bakery! Our models from left to right are Evan Scott, a writer and BU Alumni, Lizz Hickey, an artist and SUNY Purchase grad, and Justin Natividad, a painter and Savannah College of Art and Design grad. Be sure to keep your eye open for the ad in the next issue of Bust magazine!

Is it the 90's again? If so, i'm super stoked. It's going to be great . I, personally, loved the 90's! The music, the style, the attitude, it's totally ..cool. Trashy, sloppy, comfy clothes. Lot's of accessorizing, dirty unwashed hair, flannel tees, ripped jeans, and red lip stick. Oh, I can go on. So let's get out of the winter blues, NYC, and get totally 90's. Michael Hickey Jewelry at Fringe...

Just in for spring, Fringe is carrying some new, or you could say old, jewelry by salon friend and designer Michael Hickey. His combination of antique and earthy elements, result in some beautifully unique pieces. Not only is each necklace and bracelet diligently designed, but they are also one of a kind. 

Michael’s jewelry design is getting some notoriety. He recently has been commissioned to design pieces for Rocawear. Lucky for you, they’re available at the salon at an inexpensive price. Most pieces are under $100, but hurry, the staff buys them before we can keep them on the shelves.
